We all have those projects that get pushed off over and over, right? Things in your home or life that are just so glaringly wrong, but for one reason or another, you just can’t seem to get around it doing anything about them? I’m so embarrassed to admit this, but this is what my bedroom looked like for almost year.
That light/curtain combo used to hang in my apartment in Boston. I didn’t even remove that white, curtain-y material when I packed it up, and I sure didn’t iron it when I unpacked it and hung it up. Who needs an iron? I knew it looked bad, but I guess I figured some decor was better than none? I don’t know.. I’m ashamed that it looked like this for so long.
So I finally grabbed a little inspiration from one of my favorite blogs, Young House Love. This is a picture of their bedroom in their old house.
I loved the look of curtains behind the bed, and even though we don’t have that little window in our room, I thought that curtains could still add an interesting texture and depth to our headboard wall.
(I know these pictures are kind of terrible, I had to stand all the way in the hallway to take them) We hung a pair of light blue Lenda curtains from Ikea. They’re listed for 29.99 on Ikea’s website but I’m pretty sure they were on sale for 14.99 when we bought them several months ago. Though you can’t see it (bad picture) they’re hung on a basic brushed nickel curtain rod from Target, whichever was the longest length. I think it was either 12.99 or 14.99. Again, I bought this several months ago and only got around to addressing the terrible light/curtain situation about a week ago. I don’t love those green throw pillows but haven’t found a replacement I love just yet.
This is Marc’s side of the bed. The nightstand is a made-over thrifted piece that my mom made for me a few years ago. The small table is something I just picked up yesterday for $20 at a local thrift shop, I thought it fit pretty well with the beachy/nautical vibe of our house. I’m not sure if it’ll stay here for the long haul but for now, I think it looks cute here. On the tall nightstand is a bottle lamp we made from a $5 glass bottle from the HomeGoods clearance section (more info on that later).
I moved the little lamp to my side of the bed. I kind of hate it but I have a plan to upgrade it a bit. I put it on top of my big medical dictionary, but the height and weight of the lamp still doesn’t balance the other side of the bed, so I’ll need to work on it a little bit. In the frame is a print from Etsy seller tastesorangey, which I love. Her art is so romantic and I want about ten more of these. My nightstand is also a made-over thrift piece that I painted and mosaic-ed with glass marbles.
Overall, I am a lot more happy with this space now, but I still have quite a few plans for it, including a little project to break up all of the matchy-matchy blueness going on and some kind of headboard makeover.
Do you have a project that you’ve put off for way too long?
